Generally, the last 20 years have been successful for Celtic. World-renowned players such as Odsonne Édouard, Kyogo Furuhashi and Virgil Van Dijk have all plied their trade at Celtic Park - but we will not be looking the many accomplishments of those three superstars today.
Instead, we’ll be looking at 20 players who have not set the world on fire since their arrival in Glasgow. Some of these names may strike fear into the hearts of Celts fans - but they certainly won’t intimidate any Scottish Premiership defences. Who is your pick for the biggest Celtic flop over the two previous decades?
5. Lassad Nouioui - Striker
The Tunisian attacker was signed by Neil Lennon, making 19 appearances and scoring three goals during his only season in 2012 before he was released. Was forced to retire in May 2018 having spent 10 days in a coma after collapsing from a heart attack while training with Spanish Third Division side Toldeo.
6. Henri Camara - Striker
The Senegalese international completed a £1.5m season-long loan switch from Wolves in July 2004 under Martin O’Neill with the option to make the deal permanent. Was aiming to follow in Larsson’s footsteps but never came close to replicating the Swedish legend. Had blistering speed but could never adapt to Celtic’s style of football and was little more than a passanger in some games.
7. Amido Balde - Striker
This signing left a lot to be desired given his goal scoring record prior to rocking up at Celtic in the summer of 2013 didn’t make for good reading. Immediately written off after a few woeful displays in pre-season and spent the rest of his short time at the club warming the bench. Nowhere near good enough.
8. Steven Mouyokolo - Defender
The injury-prone French centre-back was surprisingly handed a one-year deal by Neil Lennon after impressing on trial. Had played just 11 games in his previous three seasons and suffered a ruptured Achilles, which ruled him out for the majority of his debut campaign. Departed with just three appearances to his name and was forced to retire, aged 27 through injury.
