The former Ibrox youngster impressed Steven Gerrard while at Rangers.

A Rangers academy graduate has returned to the Premiership after time in the lower leagues.

Josh McPake was rated highly by former Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard but only made one senior appearance at his boyhood club. He departed Rangers last summer and spent half of last term without a club before joining League One side Stirlin Albion, who were eventually relegated to League Two.

McPake impressed, however, for the Binos and had a transfer audition via training with St Johnstone. He’s now proved his worth to boss Craig Levein, who’s snapped him up on a two-year deal. The winger said: “I’m absolutely delighted. When I was told the club was interested, I was just buzzing to get going.

“When I came in towards the end of last season, the gaffer wanted a wee look at me. I thought I did well and I really enjoyed training and being with the lads.

“The runs have been hard but that is pre-season. I’ve done many a pre-season now so you know what to expect. I’ve come back in good shape and I’m looking forward to the games coming up and getting myself fit and ready.”

Levein said: “Josh impressed when he joined us for training last season and we were keen to welcome him back in for the upcoming campaign. He has undeniable ability and we will be working hard to ensure he is up to speed and ready to attack the Premier Sports Cup games next month.”

Speaking after a star turn by McPake against Liverpool in a bounce game and Celtic during 2019’s Youth Cup final, Gerrard said: “I rate Josh very highly but I don’t want to add any pressure to him.

“Josh was outstanding against Liverpool last week and at Hampden on Thursday he was part of a really strong team performance.

“I have to take into consideration that he’s still a baby at 17 years old. But the message is to be ready. The young kids have given me something to think about and we’ve already shown that we’ll give people opportunities.”
