23-year-old Sam joined The Killers on-stage at the OVO Hydro on June 26 when he was plucked from the crowd to play drums for the band

The Killers brought the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas to the OVO Hydro last night on their Rebel Diamonds tour and were joined by a very special guest on stage.

Before Brandon Flowers and the band began “For Reasons Unknown”, which comes from their second album Sam’s Town, the frontman spotted a sign in the crowd and invited someone from the audience on stage.

We spoke to Sam Hirschfield who had a night to remember at the OVO Hydro as he joined The Killers on stage.

Chris Phelps

Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

“My name’s Sam. I’m 23 years old and I actually stay on the Isle of Arran. I work in a care home and I also play in my own covers band called Dark White on the Island and off the Island.

“I also play in a band called Noel Gallagher High Flying Carpets. We play in pretty good size venues with that band as well. I’ve been following The Killers for the last two years when they come to Scotland and that was actually my fourth attempt at trying to play the drums last night.”

How are you feeling the morning after playing with The Killers on stage?

“It was just so surreal walking up, especially in the Hydro, that’s kind of my local, that’s where I go watch a lot of gigs. So looking out and seeing it from that perspective and thinking about how many other bands have stood there nonetheless, the Killers as they are my favourite.

“I mean, shaking Brandon’s hand, it’s so surreal and such an achievement and they were so nice and welcoming as well, which was great.”

For anyone who wasn’t at the gig, can you tell us how you ended up on stage with The Killers?

“So basically, it’s a thing they do where they invite the drummers up. I mean, sometimes they don’t invite anyone up. Sometimes people go up and they get chucked off because they are rubbish and sometimes they don’t play the song at all. So it’s all a bit of a gamble. But basically I had my sign up the night before and Brandon noticed it and then last night, as soon as the song started, he sort of clocked me straight away and gave me my shot basically.”

Is there anyway that you can prepare yourself for something like that?

I mean, there’s no answer for that. All you can do is make sure you know the song and just try and put the nerves to one side, which is not easy. I made sure to get a little drink of water before in case it did happen, but I mean, nothing can prepare you for that, but you just have to know within yourself that you can do it basically.”

“Yeah, I said to him afterwards, can you tell I watch you? And he was like, yeah man, that was so good. And Brandon was really happy with it as well.”
